Discovering Wards Island: Your Perfect Escape from Toronto's Hustle
Wards Island is a tranquil retreat from the hustle of Toronto proper —- but, literally minutes away by ferry.
It’s the Getaway for the Urbanite. And I love it.
Access to Wards Island is primarily by ferry, which adds to the island’s charm and sense of separation from the mainland. The short ferry ride from the city’s waterfront transports visitors to a tranquil oasis, where the pace of life slows down, and the urban landscape gives way to lush greenery and stunning waterfront views.
The island is characterized by its tree-lined streets, charming cottages, and well-maintained gardens. Many of these cottages, known as “summer homes,” have been passed down through generations and are owned by long-standing residents.
I love walking the small (car-less) streets, and wondering about the lives of all the people who live there. The houses are charming, cottage-like, each one unique. Glass Boxes are often outside, showcasing Art + Photography.
It’s a true Neighbour community, and a harken back to simpler times.
📍 They ferry runs frequently, all day from Harbourfront, but alternately you can get across by Water Taxi.
Some of my fave spots on the island include
@islandcafeto — My first stop for coffees, Patio Vibes, Lunch + Live Music.
@torontoislandsup provides SUP rentals, which is a fantastic way to tout around the island.
@runawaycafeto is a sweet pink camper van, selling coffees, treats + healthy veg bowls. It’s right in front of its sister spots @theriv_kitchen + @castaways_rum_shack , which is a colourful patio Great for drinks + a slow hang.
Ward’s Beach is on the south side of the island. Busy on the weekends, and not overly large, it’s actually super perfect. A short walk to the @islandcafeto for ice cream + refreshments, and adjacent to the boardwalk that trolls the south side of the island with a lovely lake view.
I bring my bike over often, biking the entire Island— from Wards, to Centre, to Hanlan’s, and back, many times over. It’s busy on the wkend with cyclists, Lolly-gaggers, strollers, roller-bladers, but there’s no cars, and it’s BEAUTIFUL, lush & vibrant.
