Living With Purpose: An Instagram Live Recap
In this candid and insightful conversation, I recap my Instagram live Q&A and I share my thoughts on procrastination, habits for success, and living a purposeful life.
Procrastination
I got some really good questions from you guys, and the first one I want to discuss is so funny because it's tied to my answer perfectly. A friend asked me about my bad habit that hampers my professional growth and the good habit that propels me forward. Well, the irony is that I procrastinate, and that's my biggest bad habit! When I first read that question, I told myself I would go back to it later .. tt's like the answer was already built into my reaction to the question. But let's dive into that and also talk about my good habits.
Habits for Success
First and foremost, my daily habit is working out, which sets me up mentally and physically for the day ahead. But when it comes to success, I believe that resilience and persistence are essential habits of mind. I've always been willing to take a swing at things, even if it means facing fear and uncertainty. Being open to learning and not being afraid to admit that I don't know something has been crucial for my growth.
The Creative Process and Procrastination
Let's talk more about procrastination because I find it's an essential part of being creative. The time spent in rumination and curiosity allows ideas to ferment and come to life. Creatives need that holding time to let thoughts flow and connect. However, procrastination can also be driven by fear. We fear that our creations won't live up to our idealized vision, so we avoid finishing or taking action.
The Journey of Authenticity
One aspect that has led to my authenticity is the practice of living in the present moment. I'm always acting from a place of how things feel, not just going through a checklist of tasks. I've learned to be humble and not let my ego drive my decisions. This way, I can produce authentic content and connect genuinely with my audience.
Embracing Uncertainty and Letting Go
I find that being open-minded and continuously learning helps me stay humble and adaptable. I'm not a fan of prescription living or rigidly following rules. Instead, I focus on how I want to live and what aligns with my values and interests. We shouldn't be scared to embrace uncertainty and let go of the need for perfection.
Procrastination and The Fear of Mediocrity
Procrastination can sometimes stem from the fear of mediocrity, especially when you've produced something great in the past. People may wonder if their best work is behind them, but it's essential to remember that growth and success come from consistency and not perfection. Celebrate the journey, and don't let fear hold you back.
Getting Out of a Slump
A slump, as I define it, is that feeling of being unmotivated to pursue things that were supposed to bring joy and success. I've identified a few reasons that can lead to this state:
Lack of Direction: Not knowing what you want can leave you feeling stuck and demotivated.
Burnout: Pushing too hard towards your goals without taking breaks can lead to burnout, leaving you drained and uninspired.
Difficult Life Events: Traumatic experiences or emotionally challenging events can greatly affect your daily life and productivity.
So, how did I manage to break free from slumps in my journey? One of the most significant factors for me was seeking support and being part of a community. As a solopreneur spending a lot of time alone, I often found that engaging with others provided new perspectives and insights that helped me navigate through tough times.
Having a business coach, a mentor, or even talking to a psychotherapist allowed me to gain clarity and move forward. Additionally, spending quality time with friends, attending social events, and enjoying outdoor activities all played a role in breaking the negative thought patterns.
Another crucial aspect was indulging in heart-led activities. Connecting with loved ones, participating in physical activities, and finding joy in simple pleasures reminded me that progress doesn't always have to be an intense pursuit. Taking time to relish moments of happiness and contentment was equally important for my personal growth.
Embracing Career Change
A common question I often hear is about transitioning from a corporate background to starting something new, like a podcast. My advice here is to leverage your existing skills and experiences in a new and creative way.
However, I caution against making sudden and drastic changes without thoroughly understanding the financial implications. Dabbling in a new endeavor to test its potential and financial feasibility is crucial before fully committing.
Remember that making a career change doesn't mean you have to abandon everything you've done before. It's about exploring and incorporating your passion into your current journey, allowing it to complement your existing skills and expertise.
As you navigate through a potential career change, consider seeking inspiration and role models who have successfully embraced new ventures at various stages of life. Age is not a limitation; it's about finding like-minded individuals who can support and encourage you in your new path.
In conclusion, overcoming a slump and embracing career change are both attainable goals. By seeking support, indulging in heart-led activities, and taking calculated steps towards change, you can find the motivation and fulfillment you desire. Remember, your journey is unique, and with the right mindset and support, you can achieve your dreams.
